English Setters - Breed History
English Setters are descendants of an ancient breed known in Britain since the 14th century. Early setters were used to "set" game for the sportsman's net, and they got the name accordingly. The setter name means the sitting position, a stance that they assume when hunting. Later they became known as English Setters to distinguish them from similar breeds that originated in other countries.
The first setter was developed in France in 1500. The dog was developed from the Spanish pointer and the French pointer. Three centuries later it was brought to Great Britain where its true developer was Sir Edward Laverack. He developed the English Setter from French hunting dogs in the early 1800s. Laverack was so instrumental in establishing the breed that the English Setter is often called the Laverack Setter. Laverack's dogs were known for their great beauty, and are foundation stock for many of today's top show dogs. Another English breeder, Llewellin, created a second famous hunting strain of English Setters. English Setters are known as America's first gun dogs.
English Setters - General Care
In order to keep the English Setter's coat in excellent condition, regular combing and brushing is required. The breed is an average shedder. Check for mats and tangles and give your dog some extra care when it is shedding. It is recommended to trim the hair on the bottom of the dog's feet. Clipping the nails and taking care of the teeth is also a part of general doggy care. English Setters are not recommended for apartment living, as they need at least an average-sized yard to meet their exercise needs.
